Providing a greater level of flexibility and operational efficiency with a new lighting upgrade throughout the entire facility. The project called for careful consideration of the building’s heritage by ensuring its integrity throughout the process.

Carriageworks is an Iconic Sydney landmark that has influenced our society from as early as the late 1889 employing thousands of people to build& maintain locomotive engines and carriages during a period of infrastructure growth enabled by an expanding rail network. Whilst the space has remained true to its original form and heritage, it today acts as a cultural precinct supporting artists and producers alike. Lowa Lighting had supported Carriage Works by providing a greater level of flexibility and operational efficiency with a new lighting upgrade throughout the entire facility. The project called for careful consideration of the building’s heritage by ensuring its integrity throughout the process.

Carriageworks was built between 1880 and 1889 as part of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops. By the 1900s several thousand people worked here, building and maintaining locomotive engines and carriages for the expanding rail network. Those workers shaped the development of our city for over 100 years.

The Carriageworks site was one of the first places to employ Aboriginal people on an equal basis. It is also the place where generations of new migrants were first employed. In 1917, it was within these walls that the Great Strike started, which saw thousands of workers march on NSW Parliament and, through sheer power in numbers, shut it down.

In 2007, the site was redeveloped as a cultural precinct.

Today Carriageworks acts as a cultural precinct supporting artists and producers alike. Novon supported Carriageworks by providing a greater level of flexibility and operational efficiency with a new lighting upgrade throughout the entire facility. The project called for careful consideration of the building’s heritage by ensuring its integrity throughout the process including lighting design, project management, implementation, installation & recycling.

Project outcomes:

  • Replacement of legacy and low efficient lighting
  • Customised integration of High Bay luminaires into original 60 year old heritage light shades
  • Designed with improved light uniformity
  • Integration of in-built, multi-level dimming sensors for optimal energy saving
  • Greater lighting flexibility for multi-venue facility
  • Substantial energy reduction
  • Significantly reduced energy usage & costs
